I was captured by Flight and blown away with Focus and now with Found, it’s easy to see why I love Alyssa and this series so much. All of your burning questions about Levi, the Pteron world, Allie’s significance, and everything else gets answered in Found and I loved how Alyssa ended it all.
Levi and Allie’s relationship basically comes full circle in this book and everything is laid out in the open. I really loved their romance in Found. You get a sweeter and more loving side to Levi that was kind of scarce in the other two books. You see why he cares so much for Allie and how much he values their relationship. There is a serious game-changer that occurs between them that involves how they got together in the first book that really tests their relationship and questions whether or not they really love each other and are meant to be together. There were quite a lot of sweet and tender moments between these two throughout the book and I really enjoyed those scenes. Levi was such an arrogant and often closed character at times throughout the series, it was nice to get a different picture of him and see how much he cares for Allie. Allie was great in this too and really stepped up her game. I liked how she headstrong she was and did things her way and really fought for what she wanted and believed in.
Other Pteron royalties who make important appearances and stir things up quite a bit for them, which I loved. I thought it was really cool seeing the other Pteron families and seeing them interact with Levi and his friends and family. I loved seeing Levi’s friends again and even Toby surprised me here and there. I seriously want to know more about them all.
I will admit it kind of bothered me how little significance was put into the capture of Allie’s friend, Jess. I kind of see where Alyssa was going with it all and everything fit together nicely, but it kind of felt weird to me, personally. Besides that minor detail, I really loved this book.
Found was a great conclusion to such a unique and captivating paranormal romance. If you think you know about the Pteron world, just wait until you dive into this book. Found is fast-paced and gets you right from the first page, as with the other books in the series. It was crazy how I was flying through all the pages. I loved every minute of it and am sad to say goodbye to these characters and this world, however, I’m definitely looking forward to Alyssa’s companion series, The Empire Chronicles (check out the interview below). Yay!
Author Interview
1. How did you come up with the idea of Pterons and what makes them so significant that they are basically supernatural royalty?
When I decided to write a paranormal romance series, I knew I wanted to create a new creature. I’m a huge fan of shifters, and the superpower I’d love to have is flight, so I developed the Pterons from there. I knew the Pterons were different from other shifters in that they are hybrids when they shift. They maintain their human form but have wings. This difference helps distinguish them from other shifters. The Pterons are more powerful and stronger than other paranormals, and they have been able to use this power to maintain control.
2. Out of all the 3 books – Flight, Focus, & Found, which was the most difficult to write? The most fun? Which one changed the most during edits?
Focus wins in all three categories. Middle books are always hard to write, but it was so much fun to move Allie and her friends onto a college campus. I made some significant changes to Focus right before I sent the beta draft out. One change in particular altered the story substantially.
3. I liked that in Found, we realize that each of the Pteron royal families has their own set of uniquely-colored wings/animal-relation. What made you decide to do that, is there any significance for each family? Why does Levi’s family & friends have black wings/crow association?
The Pterons were all once bird shifters. I always pictured that different groups developed from different types of birds. The Laurent’s just seemed like crow shifters to me. There is something almost creepy about crows sometimes, and it just fit.
4. One of the things I love most about your books are your characters. I’ve read all of your Derailed series, The Crescent Chronicles, & Hazards of Skinny Dipping and I love that they’re all so relatable, flawed, and pretty much, realistic (yet lovable and swoonworthy) – even the supernatural ones. Why do you choose to write your characters that way as opposed to creating amazing, yet unrealistic characters who readers would love, but wouldn’t necessarily exist in the real world?
I love writing about flawed characters because they are real. As much as I enjoy getting lost in the fantasy of a good book, I also want the characters to be the type that could walk off the page into real life. I strive to create characters that remind readers of someone they know, or maybe that they wish they knew. I believe strongly in character growth. I love reading and writing stories where the characters grow throughout the course of the book or series. I think this is especially true in the Crescent Chronicles.
5. I’m definitely a Levi fan, he’s pretty swoonworthy, BUT it really bothered me how he kept so many secrets from Allie. What was your rationale behind that aspect of his character?
Levi is one of those characters that really grew on me as I wrote the series. I liked him at first, but by the time I wrote Found, he’d become one of my favorites. Levi keeps things from Allie because he’s terrified of losing her. In his mind, the less he tells her, the less likely she is to leave him. Both Allie and Levi have the tendency to hide important information from each other. In the end, many of their problems could have been solved by being more open with each other.
6. Can we expect any more books from the Pteron world? Any hints/sneak peeks that you can give us? *fingers crossed for a story on Jared and/or Owen*
Soar (The Empire Chronicles #1) will be releasing in late 2013. This is a follow up series to Crescent, and will feature many of the Crescent characters. However, the focus will be on a new girl (Casey), as well as Toby and Jared. The Empire Chronicles are set in New York. I’m really excited to continue with the Pteron world!
